Ducks’ Ryan Getzlaf sits out practice after being struck in head by puck

Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf is scheduled to undergo an MRI and other tests Thursday after he was struck on the forehead by a puck Tuesday. He’s doubtful for the team’s next game, against the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday at the Honda Center.

Getzlaf had swelling on his forehead and felt nauseated Wednesday. He was told to rest and restrict his movement, and he did not practice.

A shot by Phoenix Coyotes forward Shane Doan deflected off Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler’s stick and rocketed up, striking Getzlaf’s forehead early in the second period of the Ducks’ 3-1 victory at Glendale, Ariz. Getzlaf, bleeding heavily, needed 10 stitches to close the wound. He did not return.

Draft pick is signed

The Ducks signed right wing Devante Smith-Pelly, their second-round pick in the June entry draft, to a three-year entry-level contract. Terms were not disclosed.

He has 20 goals, 37 points and a plus-28 defensive rating for Mississauga of the Ontario Hockey League this season.

Prospects shine

Ducks prospects Emerson Etem of Long Beach and Kyle Palmieri figured in Team USA’s 6-1 rout of Slovakia on Tuesday at the world junior hockey championships at Buffalo, N.Y. Palmieri, chosen 26th overall in 2009, had two goals and an assist and Etem scored a goal. Another Ducks prospect, defenseman Sami Vatanen, captain of Team Finland, had an assist Wednesday in a 5-1 rout of Germany.
