Warren Sapp arrested on domestic battery charges

Former NFL star Warren Sapp was arrested Saturday following an alleged domestic violence incident at a Miami Beach hotel, police said.

Sapp was charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic battery and is expected to appear before a Miami-Dade County judge Sunday, Miami Beach police spokesman Juan Sanchez said.

Shortly after police officials confirmed the charge, NFL Network spokesman Dennis Johnson said in an e-mail to the Associated Press that Sapp -- who is an analyst -- wouldn’t be part of the Super Bowl coverage for Sunday’s game between the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints.

“We have been made aware of the arrest of Warren Sapp by the Miami Beach Police Department,” a network statement said. “In light of these circumstances, Warren Sapp will not appear on NFL Network while we review the matter.”

The domestic violence allegation was reported about noon Saturday, and detectives interviewed Sapp later that day, Sanchez said.

Cilic reaches final at Zagreb

Defending champion Marin Cilic of Croatia beat third-seeded Juergen Melzer of Austria, 7-6 (5), 6-4, to reach the Zagreb Indoors final in Croatia.

He will play Michael Berrer, who beat fellow German Philipp Petzschner, 7-6 (6), 7-5, to reach his first ATP Tour final.

The top-seeded Cilic improved to 14-1 in 2010. He is going for his second title this year and the fifth of his career.

Cilic won in Chennai, India, in January and reached the semifinals of the Australian Open to break into the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time.

Feliciano Lopez of Spain and Stephane Robert of France advanced to the final of the SA Open at Johannesburg, South Africa, after eliminating the two highest-seeded players.

Lopez upset top-seeded Gael Monfils of France, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), and Robert ousted second-seeded David Ferrer of Spain, 7-5, 6-4.

Melanie Oudin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands won the opening singles to give the United States a 2-0 lead against France in the quarterfinals of the Fed Cup at Lievin, France.

The Oakland Athletics have traded left-hander Dana Eveland to the Toronto Blue Jays for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Couture defeats Coleman in UFC

Randy Couture stopped Mark Coleman with a rear naked choke to win a bout in Las Vegas between two UFC hall of fame members in their mid-40s.

The five-time champion took Coleman down early in the second round and quickly gained the mount position.

Coleman, who at 45 is a year younger than Couture, rolled and gave up his back to Couture, who then sunk in the submission attempt and forced the referee to stop the fight at 1:09 of the second.

Bernard Lagat shattered the American record in the indoor 5,000 meters at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games.

Lagat’s time of 13 minutes 11.50 seconds beat the previous mark by almost seven seconds.

Vesa Toskala, the backup goaltender acquired by the Ducks in the trade that sent Jean-Sebastien Giguere to Toronto, is expected to join the team for practice Sunday after resolving immigration issues. As a result, goalie Justin Pogge was assigned to San Antonio of the American Hockey League.
