Wednesday’s aerials finals have an air of unfamiliarity

Cypress Mountain does not care about your aerial ski jumping credentials.

Olympic gold medal on your resume? Who cares?

Outstanding World Cup form among your references? Yawn.

None of it has guaranteed a thing. Not on Cypress.

On the men’s side, the defending gold medalist as well as the No. 1-ranked aerialist failed to make the 12-man final, both botching their second jumps in qualifying.

Evelyne Leu of Switzerland, the defending Olympic gold medalist, also fell by the wayside in women’s qualifying, as she somersaulted on her landing and lost her skis.

The top four qualifiers for Wednesday night’s women’s final include 30-year-old four-time Olympian Alla Tsuper of Belarus, followed by No. 1-ranked Nina Li and two other Chinese aerialists.

Three Americans made the final 12: Emily Cook, Lacy Schnoor and teenager Ashley Caldwell. Cook and Schnoor qualified fifth and sixth, respectively. Caldwell, an Olympic newcomer at 16, barely squeaked in, placing 12th. Teammate Jana Lindsey did not make the final 12.

Schnoor, a former gymnast, won the Olympic trials in December. She has joined the likes of fellow Olympians Lindsey Vonn and Hannah Teter in making something of a splash with her appearance in Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue.
