Coach will be only title Carroll gets from Seahawks

Pete Carroll originally expected to be coach and president of the Seahawks, but now it looks like coach is the only title he’ll hold.

That’s not to say he won’t have major say in personnel decisions. It’s just that the team has promised the Fritz Pollard Alliance that Carroll will be working with a separate club president and/or general manager. It remains to be seen what the repercussions of breaking that promise would be, but the NFL takes the Rooney Rule very seriously and the Seahawks are likely to take a by-the-book approach heading forward.

Watch for the Seahawks to hire Carroll, then take their time interviewing candidates for the GM job, while remaining very mindful of the Rooney Rule requirements. This could lead to the promotion of Will Lewis, Seattle’s current pro personnel director who Friday interviewed with Mike Holmgren for the GM job in Cleveland. Lewis is widely respected and, by all accounts, would work well with Carroll.

So the Carroll offer is coming into clearer focus. It’s $32.5 million for five years ($6.5 million per year) to be coach -- and only coach -- of the Seattle Seahawks.
