BOOKS

Aimee Bender and Glen David Gold in Conversation The two Southern California natives (though Gold defected to the North) visit Aloud at Central Library to talk cats, magic, MFA programs and, of course, books. Bender is the author of the story collections “The Girl in the Flammable Skirt” and “Willful Creatures,” and most recently, the novel “The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake.” Gold’s novels are “Carter Beats the Devil” and last year’s Chaplin-centric “Sunnyside.” Richard J. Riordan Central Library, 630 W. 5th St., L.A. 7 p.m. Free. (213) 228-7025. www.aloudla.org.

Digital Culture in the Age of American Unreason Between e-mail, text messaging, social-networking websites and blogs, there’s no shortage of ways to communicate these days. But perhaps it’s worth asking what all this chatter means, and whether we’re saying more about less. Susan Jacoby, author of “The Age of American Unreason,” and Nicholas Carr, a writer on technology and culture, will discuss these topics with moderator Ian Masters, a journalist and host of the radio program “Background Briefing.” Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. 7 p.m. Free. (310) 443-7000. https://www.hammer.ucla.edu.
