Mono Basin Bird Chautauqua

When, where: June 18-20, various locations (check-in at Lee Vining Community Center)

Highlights: This annual event provides the chance to see more than 180 migrating bird species as they converge in Mono County, plus attend field trips, lectures and other avian-themed events.

Cost: Basic registration, $60; $50 for students; free for ages 12 and younger

SAN FRANCISCO

Giants County Fair

When, where: Through June 20, AT&T Park

Highlights: More than 20 amusement rides, midway games, carnival food, music, traditional county fair contests (cherry-pit spitting, anyone?) and six Giants baseball games. Plus information on homegrown foods and workshops on beekeeping, composting, mushroom cultivating and raising backyard chickens.

Cost: Admission is free; ride tickets cost $5 each, or $20 for unlimited rides

SANTA MARGARITA, CALIF.

‘Best of the West’ 50th Anniversary National Show

When, where: June 24-27, Santa Margarita Ranch

Highlights: At a historic ranch just north of Atascadero, a tractor festival unlike any other in California happens, with a lot of engines, small trains, antique Caterpillar machinery and a horse-drawn power pumper on display. Cost: $10 a day; $25 for all four days; free for ages 10 and younger

PARK CITY, UTAH

Food & Wine Classic

When, where: July 8-11, various locations

Highlights: This event pairs wine and food with the great outdoors, so expect hikes and bike rides that end in gourmet lunches as well as the Park City Stroll, where wine and food tastings happen throughout downtown. Also: elaborate dinners, educational sessions and wine competitions.

Cost: $20 to $300, depending on event
