Justine Henin wins Wimbledon tuneup

Justine Henin tuned up for Wimbledon by beating Germany’s Andrea Petkovic, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to win the UNICEF Open on Saturday at Den Bosch, Netherlands, for her first grass-court title in three years.

Petkovic broke the top-seeded Belgian in the second game of the final set before holding serve for a comfortable 3-0 lead. But Henin held serve and blasted a forehand winner on her way to breaking the German in the fifth game. Henin, who did not drop a set or face a tiebreak heading into the final, completed a stunning rally by breaking Petkovic in the ninth game.

Unseeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia defeated Victoria Azarenka, 7-6 (5), 6-4, at the Eastbourne International grass-court event at England to win her first career title.

The 22-year-old becomes the first unseeded champion at Eastbourne since American Chanda Rubin in 2002. She’s also the first qualifier to win the title.

In the men’s final, Michael Llodra of France defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 7-5, 6-2, for his second title of the year.

MOTOR RACING

Carl Edwards swooped past Jacques Villeneuve on a restart with nine laps to go, then ran away from the field to win the NASCAR Nationwide series race at Road America at Elkhart Lake, Wis.

Villeneuve made a wild charge to the lead with 12 laps to go. But another caution bunched up the field, allowing Edwards to make his decisive move.

Will Power won the pole for the Iowa 250 at Newton, grabbing the top spot for the fourth time this season and first on an oval track. Power gives Team Penske a record seventh straight IndyCar pole position. He ran an average lap of 181.337 mph on the Iowa Speedway’s .875-mile oval, beating out Scott Dixon by a fraction of a second.

Ashley Force Hood secured her 11th career No. 1 qualifying position in funny car at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway.

GOLF

South Korea’s M.J. Hur shot a seven-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead over Paula Creamer after two rounds of the ShopRite LPGA Classic at Galloway Township, N.J. Hur birdied the 18th hole for a a 36-hole total of 11-under 131.

Creamer, who is playing for the first time since having surgery on her left thumb in late March, had a second-round 65 that was capped by a 45-foot birdie on the last hole at Seaview’s Bay Course.

John Daly was four strokes off the lead after shooting a one-under 69 in the third round of the Fort Smith (Ark.) Classic. Josh Broadaway (65) moved to the top of the leaderboard at the 6,873-yard Hardscrabble Country Club course at 11 under.

Cycling’s governing body will perform tests at this year’s Tour de France to ensure that racers are not cheating by using motors hidden in their bicycle frames.

Recent speculation has focused on Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara, who denied he won Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders this year with the help of a motorized bike. A video posted on various websites appears to show Cancellara pushing a button on the handlebars of his bike during both races.

Rui Da Costa of Portugal broke away over the final six miles to win the eighth stage of the Tour of Switzerland at Liestal. Robert Gesink of the Netherlands maintained the race leader’s jersey, and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong held seventh place, 55 seconds back.

Jason Arnott, who scored the Stanley Cup-clinching goal for New Jersey in 2000, was acquired by the Devils from the Nashville Predators for right wing Matt Halischuk and a second-round draft pick in the 2011. Arnott, who had 19 goals and 27 assists in 63 games last season, waived a no-trade clause in his contract to make the deal happen.

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to trade tackle Jammal Brown to the Washington Redskins for an undisclosed pick in the 2011 NFL draft. Brown, 29, is a two-time Pro Bowl selection. … Defensive lineman Richard Seymour signed his $12.4-million exclusive franchise tag tender with the Oakland Raiders.

Harness racing driver Richard Silverman remained in intensive care at a New Jersey hospital Saturday, one day after he was hurt in a spill at the Meadowlands Racetrack that injured three other drivers and unseated six overall. Track officials said Silverman was at Hackensack University Medical Center, receiving treatment for a concussion and ankle fractures he suffered during Friday night’s second race at the track.

Britain’s Dwain Chambers won the 100 meters in 9.99 seconds on the first day of the European Team Championships at Bergen, Norway.

Manute Bol, the 7-foot-7 shot-blocker from Sudan who spent 10 seasons in the NBA and was dedicated to humanitarian work in Africa, died Saturday. He was 47.
