Yankees’ A.J. Burnett trying to end slump
Let the worrying begin.
The Yankees, though, started a while ago.
Pitcher A.J. Burnett, who is scheduled to start Game 2 of the Yankees’ series against the Dodgers on Saturday, is coming off his fourth consecutive loss — a 10-4 decision against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday.
At Dodger Stadium on Friday, the right-hander said ending his slump, which has him at 6-6 with a 4.83 earned-run average, was a “matter of getting more focused.”
Burnett started the season 6-2 but hasn’t won a start since May 19. In June, he is 0-4 with a 10.35 ERA and has given up nine home runs.
Jeter discusses Torre
Dodgers Manager Joe Torre is known for winning four World Series rings.
Before Friday, the players responsible for bringing him that hardware had never been in the opposing clubhouse.
Leading up to this series, Yankees players have talked about how it would feel to play against Torre . But on Friday, Derek Jeter talked about Torre the person, not the baseball coach.
“Joe’s style was getting to know people,” Jeter said. “You don’t treat everyone the same because certain people may be more sensitive than others. I think his style was getting to know people personally.”
Jeter said he and Torre spoke Wednesday, but the Yankees’ shortstop said the conversation had nothing to do with baseball.
And finally
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said he was confident he would be able to start catcher Jorge Posada twice in this series. Posada sat out the final two weeks of May because of a broken foot.
Girardi said he has watched Posada closely to make sure he is progressing to where he can catch a full series soon.
