Time seems to fly by faster every year. That’s why it’s so hard to believe that the intense film adaptation of Tom Clancy’s Cold War thriller “The Hunt for Red October,” starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. You can join in the commemoration Thursday as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Science and Technology Council presents a screening of a new 35-millimeter print at the Linwood Dunn Theater.
After the movie, film historian and author Eric Lichtenfeld will talk with crew members. The event is sold out, but stand-by numbers will be assigned at 5:30 p.m. www.oscars.org.
Henzell tribute
At the Egyptian Theatre, the American Cinematheque celebrates the legacy of the late Caribbean director Perry Henzell on Friday with a screening of his seminal 1972 “The Harder They Come,” starring reggae singer Jimmy Cliff, and his follow-up, “No Place Like Home.” Henzell began the latter film in the 1970s only to have the footage disappear. Thirty years later, it was rediscovered and completed in 2006, just prior to his death at age 70. Wayne Jobson will lead a discussion between films with the director’s daughter, Justine Henzell, actress P.J. Soles and others. www.egyptiantheatre.com.
Day and Hudson
Doris Day and Rock Hudson made three romantic comedies from 1959 to 1964, and their two best vehicles -- 1959’s “Pillow Talk” and 1961’s crackling “Lover Come Back” -- screen Sunday and Monday at the New Beverly Cinema. www.new bevcinema.com.
