The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel who were killed in Afghanistan:

Jeremy L. Brown, 20, of McMinnville, Tenn.; specialist, Army. Brown was killed May 9 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire at Contingency Outpost Zerok in southeast Afghanistan’s Paktika province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Kyle A. Comfort, 27, of Jacksonville, Ala.; captain, Army. Comfort was killed May 8 when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Joshua M. Davis, 19, of Perry, Iowa; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Davis was killed in combat May 7 in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Joshua D. Desforges, 23, of Ludlow, Mass.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Desforges was killed in combat Wednesday in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Jeffery W. Johnson, 21, of Tomball, Texas; corporal, Marine Corps. Johnson was one of two Marines killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near them while they were on foot patrol in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Denis D. Kisseloff, 45, of Saint Charles, Mo.; specialist, Army National Guard. Kisseloff was killed Friday when his unit was attacked with a rocket-propelled grenade and small-arms fire at Forward Operating Base Shank in central Afghanistan’s Logar province, south of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1141st Engineer Company in Kansas City, Mo.

Donald J. Lamar II, 23, of Fredericksburg, Va.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Lamar was killed in combat Wednesday in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Kenneth B. May, Jr., 26, of Kilgore, Texas; sergeant, Marine Corps. May was one of two Marineskilled Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near them while they were on foot patrol in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Christopher Rangel, 22, of San Antonio; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Rangel was killed in combat May 6 in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Kurt S. Shea, 21, of Frederick, Md.; corporal, Marine Corps. Shea was killed in combat Monday in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
