Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez and Bronson Arroyo are first-time Gold Glove winners

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, both of the Colorado Rockies, and Cincinnati pitcher Bronson Arroyo are first-time Gold Glove award winners.

Also winning National League Gold Gloves were St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols and Reds third baseman Scott Rolen. It was the eighth Gold Glove for Rolen and the second for Pujols. Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips won his second award.

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina repeated, as did outfielders Shane Victorino of the Phillies and Michael Bourn of the Astros. Molina and Victorino are three-time winners.

Panthers go back to Clausen

Jimmy Clausen, who struggled in his first stint as the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback, will return to that role after a shoulder injury ended Matt Moore’s season.

Hill is Lions’ starting quarterback again

Shaun Hill is back as Detroit’s starting quarterback, and the Lions are moving on yet again without injured Matthew Stafford, who is out with an injured right shoulder.

Mosqueda-Lewis signs with Connecticut

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, the top-rated senior girls’ basketball player in the Southland, signed on to play for top-ranked Connecticut Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA early signing period for winter and spring sports.

In men’s basketball, UCLA signed Norman Powell, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from San Diego Lincoln High. Powell averaged 19.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 1.7 assists last season in leading his team to a state Division II championship.

USC signed three players: Byron Wesley, a 6-5 forward from Rancho Cucamonga Etiwanda High, Alexis Moore, a 6-1 point guard from Long Beach Poly High, and James Blasczyk, a 7-1 center transfer from Lee (Texas) College.

NHL: Changes in store for All-Star game

The NHL All-Star game will undergo some major changes after its one-year Olympic absence.

The next game, to be played Jan. 30 at Raleigh, N.C., will not have the East-vs.-West format and will instead be a kind of fantasy contest with the captains of each side choosing their teammates in a draft to be held the Friday before the game. Players will also select who faces who in the skill contests.

The NHL and the NHL Players’ Assn. announced the changes Wednesday and are expected to provide more details during a conference call with reporters Thursday.

Passings: Dave Niehaus, Hall of Fame broadcaster

Dave Niehaus, the Hall of Fame broadcaster who called Seattle Mariners games from their first season through this year, has died of a heart attack. He was 75. Niehaus died at his home in suburban Bellevue, Wash., according to his family.

Niehaus was the voice of the Mariners from their first game on April 6, 1977, through the end of the 2010 season with his golden Midwestern voice punctuated by his trademark “My oh My!” and “It will fly away!” calls.

Niehaus got into broadcasting as a student at Indiana. He worked for the Armed Forces Network in Los Angeles and New York before anchoring himself in the L.A. market in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, calling games for the Angels and UCLA football.

The Oakland Athletics boosted their offense and added a reliable outfielder, acquiring David DeJesus from the Kansas City Royals for right-hander Vin Mazzaro and minor league left-hander Justin Marks.

Tiger Woods two strokes back in Australia

Tiger Woods hit the ball as well as he has all year, except on the greens.

In his final title defense of a forgettable year, Woods opened the Australian Masters with a two-under 69 and was four shots behind the early leaders Thursday at Victoria Golf Club.

Woods missed only two greens in regulation, both times saving par from a bunker. But he took 19 putts on his outward nine, and had to hole a seven-foot par putt on the final hole to avoid his second three-putt bogey.

Alistair Presnell and Adam Bland each at 65, one shot clear of a group that included PGA Tour winner Andre Stolz.

Tennis: Roger Federer, Andy Roddick win in Paris

Roger Federer eased into the third round of the Paris Masters with a 6-4, 6-4 win over local favorite Richard Gasquet.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick, Andy Murray and Robin Soderling all joined Federer in the third round.
