UCLA’s Johnathan Franklin tops 1,000 yards rushing

UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin became the first UCLA player to top 1,000 yards rushing since Chris Markey in 2006.

Franklin went over the mark with 73 yards against Arizona State on Friday. But it was the one yard he didn’t get that he fretted about in the 55-34 loss to the Sun Devils.

The Bruins had a fourth-and-goal at the one-yard line, trailing 24-20 in the third quarter. Franklin was to try to dive over the pile. That’s what offensive coordinator Norm Chow called for and what Coach Rick Neuheisel told Franklin to do.

Instead, Franklin said, “I thought I saw something and I hit it.” The Arizona State defensive line hit him short of the goal line.

“I should have gone over the top,” Franklin said.

Franklin had a 55-yard run on the Bruins’ first series and went over 1,000 yards in the second quarter.

“It’s definitely a great accomplishment,” Franklin said. “I’m blessed to get it. But I’ve got to work harder to get even better.”

Franklin has 1,018 yards this season.

Brehaut sets record

UCLA quarterback Richard Brehaut set a school record for passing attempts and completions, as he tried to rally the Bruins in the second half.

Brehaut was 33 for 56 for 321 yards and three touchdowns. The Bruins went almost exclusively to the pass after Arizona State curtailed their running game.

Several of his completions came on the run.

“It’s tough when the defense knows you’re going to be throwing the ball,” Brehaut said. “That’s when you improvise, and me and my receivers find windows.”

Forbath ties record

Kai Forbath had field goals of 40 and 37 yards to give him 85 for his career, tying John Lee’s school record.

“I didn’t even know until the fourth quarter,” Forbath said. “It’s exciting, but I wish it would have come on a game-winner.”

Forbath has made 13 of 18 field goals this season and said, “I actually thought it was going to happen a lot earlier in the season. We kicked so many the last couple seasons, but it’s been that kind year. I’ll take what I can get.”

Forbath got a do-over on his record-tying kick. He missed from 53 yards out on the last play of the first half. But Arizona State’s James Brooks was called for leaping on the back of a teammate in an attempt to block the kick, a 15-yard penalty. Forbath then made the 37-yard attempt.

Forbath is four short of the NCAA career record held by Georgia’s Bill Bennett.

Quick hits

Wide receiver Nelson Rosario had nine receptions, a career single-game high. He had 65 yards receiving, including a 21-yard touchdown reception. … Defensive tackle Cassius Marsh and cornerback Andrew Abbott suffered head injuries during the game and will be reevaluated in Los Angeles.
