Minnesota’s Cedric Griffin is out for season with another knee injury

The Minnesota Vikings have lost starting cornerback Cedric Griffin for the rest of the season to another significant knee injury.

Coach Brad Childress confirmed Tuesday that Griffin hurt his right knee against the New York Jets the night before and won’t return in 2010. Griffin tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last January in the NFC championship game and rejoined the Vikings in Week 3.

In just his second game back, Griffin injured the other knee in the third quarter against the Jets. Childress stopped short of confirming he tore the ACL, but said, “It’s probably headed that way.”

Cutler to start Sunday?

The NFL Network is reporting that Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is scheduled to start against Seattle on Sunday, two weeks after suffering a concussion.

The Bears refused to confirm Tuesday’s report by the NFL Network, which cited a league source it did not identify.

Coach Lovie Smith said Monday he was “hopeful” that Cutler would be able to play. Bears spokesman Scott Hagel said the quarterback situation will be discussed Wednesday.

Saints sign Jones, release Carney

The New Orleans Saints have signed running back Julius Jones and released kicker John Carney.

Seattle released Jones earlier this month. He was the Seahawks’ leading rusher the last two seasons.

The 46-year-old Carney signed with the Saints in September to fill in for the team’s struggling kicker, Garrett Hartley — who is poised to reclaim the job with Carney’s departure.

The team also announced Tuesday that it signed safety Matt Giordano, a free agent, and waived running back DeShawn Wynn.

Revis’ hamstring still sore

Darrelle Revis’ balky left hamstring is acting up again.

The New York Jets cornerback said his leg was “very sore” after the team’s victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night. Coach Rex Ryan was not sure Tuesday if Revis would play against Denver on Sunday.

“There was added swelling in his leg,” Ryan said, “but hopefully he’ll be ready to roll.”

The St. Louis Rams promoted wide receiver Danario Alexander from the practice squad to the active roster to replace injured Mark Clayton…. Under NFLPA regulations, contract advisors are held responsible for the actions of recruiters. The NFLPA didn’t name the player involved…. Desperate for quarterback help because of ankle injuries to Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, Cleveland re-signed Brett Ratliff as the probable backup to rookie Colt McCoy, who probably will make his first NFL start on Sunday in Pittsburgh…. The San Diego Chargers have signed receiver Richard Goodman from the practice squad to the active roster…. The Buffalo Bills signed linebacker Thomas Williams to their practice squad…. The New England Patriots put offensive lineman Nick Kaczur on injured reserve because of a back problem.
