Rick Rypien of Canucks is suspended six games for grabbing fan
Vancouver enforcer Rick Rypien has been suspended six games for grabbing a fan during the Canucks’ loss to Minnesota this week.The Canucks also were fined $25,000 in the discipline announced Friday by the NHL.
While headed to locker room Tuesday night after being assessed a double minor for roughing and 10-minute misconduct, Rypien reached up and grabbed James Engquist, a fan applauding at the railing.
Football: No charges filed against Junior Seau
No criminal charges will be filed against football star Junior Seau for the incident that led to his arrest Sunday night on a domestic-violence complaint by his 25-year-old girlfriend, the San Diego County district attorney said.
On Sunday, Seau was arrested by Oceanside police and booked into the Vista jail. After making bail, Seau drove his Cadillac Escalade off a 150-foot cliff in Carlsbad onto the beach about 8:40 a.m.
The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Seau told Carlsbad police that he had fallen asleep at the wheel of the SUV.

Tennis: Federer reaches Stockholm semifinals
Roger Federer recovered from a set and 2-0 down to beat fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, and reach the Stockholm Open semifinals.
Federer meets fourth-seeded Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia next. Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen, and Germany’s Florian Mayer complete the final four.
Ana Ivanovic’s recent run of good results came to an end with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat to Julia Goerges in the Luxembourg Open quarterfinals.
Goerges will face fellow German Angelique Kerber in the semifinals.
NBA: David Stern suggests league could shrink
NBA Commissioner David Stern says he thinks eliminating teams will be on the table during collective bargaining as a way to solve the league’s financial woes.
He said the league and the players’ association may look to see if there are “cities and teams that cannot make it in the current economic environment.”
Golf: Jonathan Byrd holds second-round lead in Las Vegas
Jonathan Byrd shot an eight-under 63 at rain-softened TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas to take the second-round lead at 13 under in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open. Ryuji Imada was a stroke back after a 62.
Corey Pavin shot a six-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Administaff Small Business Classic at the Woodlands, Texas. Mark Wiebe was second, and Russ Cochran opened with a 69.
Japan’s Mika Miyazato and South Korea’s Jee Young Lee shot five-under 66s in steamy conditions to share the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia lead, while Michelle Wie opened with a 68 in the Kuala Lumpur event.

Kohei Uchimura of Japan overcame searing shoulder pain to retain his all-around title Friday, and 16-year old Aliya Mustafina of Russia won the women’s event for her second gold medal at the world gymnastics championships at Rotterdam, Netherlands.
