Bills release quarterback Trent Edwards

The winless Buffalo Bills released fourth-year quarterback Trent Edwards on Monday.

Edwards, 26, was selected by the Bills in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft but has struggled with injuries and consistency.

The Bills’ offense ranked last in the NFL in yards and points after Buffalo lost its first two games when Edwards was then benched in favor of Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bills lost again, 38-30, to the New England Patriots, on Sunday, but Fitzpatrick completed 20 of 28 passes for 247 yards with two touchdowns and two late interceptions.

“Those kind of decisions are never easy. [Edwards] gave us everything he had,” Bills Coach Chan Gailey said.

Gailey said Fitzpatrick’s play against the Patriots influenced his decision. “After the way that Fitz played yesterday, I feel very confident in the direction we’re going in.”

49ers fire offensive coordinator

The San Francisco 49ers fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, one day after San Francisco lost, 31-10, at Kansas City to fall to 0-3.

The 49ers have scored only 38 points this season, second-fewest in the NFL behind Carolina.

Mike Johnson will move from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. Offensive assistant Jason Michael will take over as quarterbacks coach.

Before the season the 49ers were a favorite by oddsmakers to win the NFC West, but their offense has struggled.

In Sunday’s loss to Kansas City, the 49ers had only 43 rushing yards and Alex Smith was sacked five times.

After the game, San Francisco Coach Mike Singletary stayed up all night watching film and thinking about his team’s struggles. “I looked at the overall view of where we are and where we need to go and felt that I needed to make the move,” he said.

Weis has gallbladder surgery

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis had emergency gallbladder surgery on Monday following the team’s 31-10 victory over San Francisco, according to the Kansas City Star.

Weis’ agent, Bob LaMonte, told the paper that Weis became ill on Friday but elected to wait until after the game Sunday to have surgery.

“He didn’t bother to do anything other than live through 48 hours of pain,” LaMonte said. “He knew he was coaching on Sunday.”

The Chiefs have a bye this weekend and LaMonte said Weis should be back to work when Kansas City plays its next game Oct. 10 at Indianapolis.
