Rio school shooting: 11 children killed in rampage
A former student went on a shooting rampage at a Rio de Janeiro elementary school Thursday killing 11 children, officials said.
Seventeen others were injured at the Tasso da Silva Municipal School before Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, 23, killed himself.
Police were summoned by a wounded student who managed to escape the school, police Colonel Djalma Beltrame told a local television station. He said the assailant posed as a lecturer to gain access to the school. He carried two revolvers. Nine boys and one girl were reportedly killed.
After the shooting, students described seeing dead bodies in the classroom.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said she was “shocked” by the killing. She asked for a minute of silence for the victims.
