The Rose Parade Line up along the route for the 122nd parade with nearly 700,000 other revelers. Floats, equestrian spectacles and more roses than could ever be counted make one of the year’s most spectacular events. Beware, though — die-hards gather as early as New Year’s Eve for prime locations. The parade begins at Green Street and Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena and ends at Sierra Madre Boulevard and Villa Street. 8 a.m. Free. For the full route, see tournamentofroses.com

Venice Penguin Club Swim Of all the ways to greet the new year, the most bracing is surely diving into the frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean. These intrepid swimmers will do just that, embarking on a brisk 400-yard outing. In addition to the glory, all finishers will receive a certificate, and snacks and hot beverages will be on hand. Sign-up begins at 11 a.m. Venice Breakwater, Venice Boulevard at Ocean Front Walk, L.A. Noon. Free. (310) 390-5700. https://www.swim.net/scaq
