Jarrett Stoll isn’t scoring and Kings Coach Terry Murray is noticing

Center Jarret Stoll, whose strong all-around play fueled the Kings’ early success, has no goals in his last 14 games and one in his last 19. And yes, Coach Terry Murray is counting.

“One goal, five assists in the month of December and that was Dec. 2, that goal,” Murray said Sunday after the team practiced in El Segundo. “I’m aware of it. The line, we need it to get going. That’s the line that played very well for us at the start of the year.”

Stoll, now centering for Ryan Smyth and Justin Williams, has eight goals, 23 points and a plus-4 defensive rating in 38 games. He has also won a healthy 60.2% of his faceoffs.

He could have put a finger on his problems by citing the tendon he tore in his right pinkie a few weeks into the season but said the injury isn’t a factor.

“I definitely would like to score more goals and create more offense, and I think lately I’ve been getting some chances and opportunities,” Stoll said. “I’ve had some very good chances at home with open nets that I’ve missed.

“You’ve just got to keep working, keep trying to stay positive and not let it bother you and infect other parts of your game because otherwise everything can go south. As long as you’re getting those chances, bear down more, try to focus and concentrate more on putting them through the net.”

Slap shots

Goaltender Jonathan Quick, who will start Monday, said several players obscured his view of the shot by winger Devin Setoguchi that was the only goal in the Kings’ 1-0 loss to San Jose on Saturday. “I picked it up as soon as it got by them. I didn’t see it come off his blade initially,” Quick said. “He has a very good shot. It’s something I kind of wish I had. … They’re not getting many opportunities, so the ones they do get you want to make sure you’re there for the guys and keep it a 0-0 game.” …

Prospect Brayden Schenn continued his dominance at the world junior championships by recording two assists Sunday in Canada’s 4-1 quarterfinal victory over Switzerland. Schenn has seven goals and 16 points in five games. Canada and the U.S. will meet in a semifinal Monday at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. …

Defenseman Willie Mitchell (knee) skated Sunday but will sit out his 10th straight game. His status remains week to week. Left wing Alexei Ponikarovsky (ankle) didn’t skate with Mitchell on Sunday, but Murray wasn’t sure why. Ponikarovsky will sit out his fifth straight game.
