Susannah York dies at 72; actress in ‘They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?’
Actress Susannah York, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the 1969 film “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?”, has died. She was 72.
York died of cancer, according to several British media reports on Saturday. No other details were given.
Known for her beauty and versatility, she became a star in the 1960s after roles in such films as “Tom Jones” in 1963 and “A Man for All Seasons” in 1966.
“They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” was the story of marathon dance contestants. York was part of a strong cast that included Jane Fonda, Gig Young, Bruce Dern, Red Buttons, Michael Sarrazin and Bonnie Bedelia in what then-Times Entertainment Editor Charles Champlin called “excellent, flamboyantly theatrical performances.”
Young won an Oscar for best supporting actor. York was nominated for best supporting actress, which was won by Goldie Hawn for “Cactus Flower.”
