When, where: Jan. 21-23, Island Golf Course at Nautical Beachfront Resort
Highlights: This gathering of hot-air balloonists features signature events such as nighttime “glows,” during which tethered vessels glow from within; a launch of tissue-paper balloons made by children; and, if winds are right, a “Splash & Dash,” when ballooners quickly dip their baskets into the lake.

California International Antiquarian Book Fair
When, where: Feb. 11-13, Concourse Exhibition Center
Highlights: The world’s largest rare-book fair brings together manuscripts, maps and ephemera from about 250 sellers, as well as book-related lectures and seminars. This year’s theme is music, so music-related books and manuscripts, some dating to the 1300s, will be on display.
Cost: $15 for three-day admission; $10 for one- or two-day admission

Centennial of Naval Aviation
When, where: Feb. 12, North Island Naval Air Station
Highlights: Celebrate 100 years of naval aviation with a Parade of Flight, featuring more than 200 vintage flying machines, an open house, ship tours, aircraft exhibits, music and food on San Diego Bay; this is among the first of a yearlong series of nationwide events.

Modernism Week
When, where: Feb. 17-27, various venues
Highlights: This 10-day tribute to Midcentury Modernism features architecture tours, a display of vintage Airstreams, a classic-car show, architecture-related films and lectures, art exhibits, the Modernism Show at the Palm Springs Convention Center, and house tours, including a rare chance to see Frank Sinatra’s 1947 abode and its grand piano-shaped swimming pool.

Cactus League Spring Training
When, where: Feb. 25-March 29, Scottsdale Stadium and other area venues
Highlights: Fifteen MLB teams, including the Dodgers, the Angels and the Giants, converge in the Sonoran Desert to prepare for the upcoming baseball season.
Cost: Tickets for individual games range from $4 to $40.
