Argentine tennis player David Nalbandian was disqualified from the Queen’s Club final Sunday after he kicked an advertising board in anger and bloodied the leg of a line judge.

London police are investigating the incident, during which Nalbandian lost his temper after missing a running forehand and kicked a board under the chair of line judge Andrew McDougall. The board shattered and a piece of it gave McDougall an inch-long gash on his left shin.

“We are aware of an incident at the Aegon Championships,” police said in a statement Monday. “A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating. The allegation is of assault.”

The police declined to say who made the complaint. It could have been McDougall or anyone who witnessed the event.

McDougall received first-aid care and saw a doctor but needed no further treatment, tournament director Chris Kermode said.

Nalbandian had won the first set of the final of the Wimbledon warm-up event against Marin Cilic of Croatia, 7-6 (3), but had fallen behind in the second set, 3-4, before being disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct. He was stripped of his $57,350 of prize money and was fined the maximum $12,560.

Ranked as high as third in the world back in 2006, Nalbandian opened the season at No. 64 and had climbed to 39th before Sunday’s incident. He is scheduled to take part in Wimbledon, which is set to start Monday.
