Los Angeles get its ‘first’ Lit Crawl on Wednesday

You’re invited to “L.A.’s first Lit Crawl!” announce the posters and emails. “On Wednesday, October 23rd, Los Angeles finally gets its own Lit Crawl.”

Finally? Not exactly. Los Angeles has been host to Lit Crawls -- a combination bar crawl and literary events -- before. There were two in 2010, one in February and another in August. Both were organized by PEN Center USA and Goodreads.

The latter also was organized in conjunction with Lit Crawl in San Francisco, which has begun exporting its branded events. Now in New York, Austin, Iowa City, and Seattle as well as San Francisco, the Lit Crawl organization is bringing its festivities to Los Angeles -- well, technically, North Hollywood -- on Wednesday.

A number of Los Angeles literary organizations have signed on to help present the one-night walkable literary event. Participating organizations include Black Clock, Dirty Laundry Lit, the Glass Table Collective, Les Figues Press, the Los Angeles Review of Books, the New Short Fiction Series, PEN Center USA, Red Hen Press, Tongue and Groove, Writers of the South Bay, Writers at Work, the World Stage and more.

Almost all readings and discussions are free; they are taking place in a variety of North Hollywood venues, including bars, a pizza place, a coffeeshop, and a hair salon. The events are organized into two time slots, beginning at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. About a dozen events will be happening simultaneously, and attendees are encouraged to move from reading to reading as they’re going on.

The evening will conclude with a closing party from 9-11 p.m. at The Hesby apartment complex with music, cocktails and dessert. Tickets are $15.
