Auto Club offers rules of the road for harmony between bikes, cars
Now that the days are longer and the weather is warmer, there will be more bicyclists on the streets, the Automobile Club of Southern California says. So it’s suggesting steps that could prevent accidents.
Some of the Auto Club rules of the road for motorists:
--When parked on streets, look for bicyclists approaching before opening your car door.
--When passing a bicyclist, slow down and try to give them at least three feet of room.
--Drivers should always signal before lane changes and turns, especially right turns, when cars will cross into the bike lane.
Some Auto Club rules for bicyclists:
--Ride on the streets, not on the sidewalk, and ride in the direction of traffic, not facing it.
--Obey all traffic laws and signs, like red lights and stop signs. If you want to ride without having to stop, go find a bike trail.
--Always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
Some less well-known anecdotal advice from bicyclists and motorists:
--Be more cautious on trash hauling days, when dumpsters are invariably blocking the bike lanes.
--Slow down in narrowed street construction zones, where cyclists are forced into traffic lanes.
--Watch out for debris. Whether its from a car accident or has been swept off the sidewalks, it always winds up in one place: the bike lane.
