The combination of Thanksgiving and the first day of Hanukkah helped make Thursday the busiest day ever for Instagram.

The Facebook-owned photo-sharing social network didn’t give any statistics, but it said this is the second year in a row that Thanksgiving broke Instagram’s usage record.

Last year, the company said, more than 10 million photos whose captions included Thanksgiving-related terms were posted, and for several hours photos were being uploaded at a rate of more than 200 per second.

This year brought even more activity.

“We saw record usage as Instagrammers shared a heaping helping of holiday cheer,” the social network said on its blog. “Your Thanksgiving and Hanukkah-related photos and videos helped make yesterday our busiest so far — and for that we give thanks to you.”

But all those photos may have taken a toll.

Instagram struggled to work properly on Friday. Several users took to Twitter to complain that the app was not functioning correctly, with photos and videos not loading properly for some time. The issue appears to be resolved now, but I’ve contacted Instagram to see what may be the problem.
