Janet Jackson announces ‘Black Diamond’ album and tour, including Staples Center show
Tour, which includes a show at Staples Center, will feature brand new music and a special performance of ‘Rhythm Nation 1814’
Janet Jackson is gearing up for a high-profile year with a new album and world tour.
The veteran vocal star announced her “Black Diamond” world tour on Monday morning. It is named after her upcoming new album, whose release date has yet to be confirmed.
Jackson has not yet announced dates outside of North America for the tour, which opens June 24 at American Airlines Arena in Miami and concludes Aug. 23 at the Tacoma Dome in Washington.
The tour will include at least five concerts in California, starting with an Aug. 10 show at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl San Diego State University. All of the tour dates appear below, along with ticket information.
“Black Diamond” will be Jackson’s first new studio album since 2015’s “Unbreakable” and only her second new album since 2008’s “Discipline.” The tour is being produced by Live Nation.
Her repertoire for her upcoming tour — according to a statement released Monday morning — will include: “songs from her 12 multi-platinum albums including a special performance of ‘Rhythm Nation 1814,’ which recently marked its 30th anniversary.”
Jackson, 53, explained the “Black Diamond” album and tour title in a post on her Instagram page Monday, writing: “I see that as the hardest to hurt or destroy. There is a lot that I have endured. I see myself as a Black Diamond in its purest form. I’m a rock, I have ruff edges but I keep moving forward. I want to show you my strength as well as give you strength.”
Tickets for Jackson’s North American “Black Diamond” tour will go on sale at noon Thursday at livenation.com. Tickets for the San Diego show will be available at ticketmaster.com, with a fan club pre-sale, a VIP pre-sale and an official platinum pre-sale all scheduled to begin Tuesday at noon.
Ticket prices for Jackson’s San Diego concert range from $49.95 to $499.95 each, plus service charges. Those prices are almost identical to tickets for the Rolling Stones’ tour-opening May 8 San Diego concert at SDCCU Stadium, for which prices range from $49.50 to $499.50, plus service charges.
Jackson’s 2017 “State of the World” tour included a date at Valley View Casino Center (now known as Pechanga Arena San Diego). It was preceded by her 2015 concert at Viejas Arena, the same SDSU venue she will return to for her Aug. 10 show here.
