Holland Taylor of ‘Two and a Half Men’ bringing ‘Ann’ to Broadway

Holland Taylor is familiar to many TV viewers for playing the randy grandmother on the CBS sitcom “Two and a Half Men.” In recent years, the Emmy-winning actress has been busy traveling the country in her one-woman stage show “Ann,” based on the life of the late Texas Gov. Ann Richards.

In March, Taylor will bring the show to New York for its Broadway debut. “Ann,” which Taylor wrote, is scheduled to open March 7 at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre -- a large house that is more accustomed to mega-productions such as “War Horse” and “The Coast of Utopia” than intimate plays.

“Ann” has already played in Richards’ home state (in Galveston and Austin) and in Chicago and Washington, D.C. Taylor wrote the play based on interviews and research she conducted on Richards, who served as the governor of Texas from 1991 to 1995.

Richards’ national profile grew when she appeared at the 1988 Democratic National Convention and criticized George H.W. Bush, saying that he was “born with a silver foot in his mouth.” As governor of Texas, Richards was known for her blunt and plain-spoken manner. She was defeated for re-election by George W. Bush in 1994.

Taylor won an Emmy in 1999 for her role on ABC’s “The Practice.” She has appeared on stage numerous times in New York and Los Angeles and at regional theaters.

The actress is also a prolific tweeter, posting multiple times a day. Her tweets are often political in nature -- she is an unabashed liberal -- and they can also be highly personal and often humorous. On Sunday, the actress offered this gem: “Will whoever stole my orange cone that keeps people from turning around in my driveway and wrecking the gravel please lube up and sit on it.”
