John Baldessari, Frank Gehry to show support for Obama campaign
The reelection campaign for President Barack Obama is getting a modest boost from some major names in the art world -- John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Bruce Nauman, Claes Odenburg, Chris Burden and Frank Gehry.
“Artists for Obama” is a portfolio of limited edition prints and other works that will be sold to benefit the president’s campaign. Nineteen artists contributed works to the portfolio, which was created in collaboration with Gemini G.E.L., a Los Angeles art workshop and print studio.
Organizers said the portfolio is being offered in exchange for a $28,000 donation to the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee. They said 150 portfolios will be up for sale, for a potential fundraising total of $4.2 million. All proceeds will go toward the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, according to organizers.
To put the figure in perspective, the George Clooney-hosted fundraiser for Obama in May reportedly brought in close to $15 million.
“Artists for Obama” will be officially unveiled on Sept. 13 at an event at Gemini G.E.L. The event, which will feature music and a reception for the artists, costs $300 per ticket and $500 per couple. The money will also go to the president’s reelection campaign.
Other contributing artists to the portfolio are Jasper Johns, Richard Tuttle, Joel Shapiro, Jonathan Borofsky, Robert Gober, Ann Hamilton, David Hammonds, Ellsworth Kelly, Brice Marden, Julie Mehretu, James Rosenquist and Susan Rothenburg.
A New York event for the portfolio is set for Sept. 24 at Gemini at Joni Moisant Weyl.
