LACMA’s next art-film gala to honor Ed Ruscha, Stanley Kubrick

LACMA has confirmed that its next Art + Film Gala, an annual event designed to help the museum shore up support from Hollywood leaders, will honor filmmaker Stanley Kubrick alongside artist Ed Ruscha.
Scheduled for Oct. 27, the event is co-chaired by Los Angeles County Museum of Art trustee Eva Chow (wife of restaurateur Michael Chow) and actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Steven Spielberg has agreed to pay a “special tribute” to Kubrick.
Many of the museum’s trustees, including Terry Semel, Brian Grazer, Michael Lynton and Steve Tisch, have industry ties. The former May Company building on the LACMA campus has also been chosen as the site of the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
Last year, the museum’s first Art + Film Gala feted John Baldessari and Clint Eastwood. But those honorees were not a central part of LACMA’s 2011 exhibition program. This time, the gala is pegged to the exhibition program, as both honorees are the subjects of upcoming exhibitions.
“Stanley Kubrick,” opening Nov. 1, will cover a number of the filmmaker’s greatest works, from “2001: A Space Odyssey” to “The Shining,” through the display of sets, costumes, props and archival material like photographs and scripts.
“Ed Ruscha: Standard,” opening Sept. 22, features nearly 100 works by the versatile Pop artist drawn from the museum’s collection, including paintings and books focusing primarily on prints and photographs.
Gala prices range from $5,000 for an individual gold ticket to $100,000 for a platinum table.
