Yuja Wang, Pinchas Zukerman and Vienna Phil headline O.C. season

The 60th season of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County will feature an array of international orchestras, recitals by two of the world’s preeminent female pianists and tap into the Benjamin Britten centenary. Among the highlights for 2013-14:

--The season’s opening night on Oct. 4 features a recital by Van Cliburn gold-medal-winning pianist Olga Kern performing the complete Rachmaninoff Preludes.

--Pianist Yuja Wang will give an Oct. 13 recital of material yet to be announced.

--Los Angeles Opera conductor James Conlon will step away from that role to lead two local college and music school orchestras, regional soloists and and a grouping of various Southern California college choirs in Britten’s War Requiem on Nov. 24.

--Conductor and violinist Pinchas Zukerman fronts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a Jan. 22 program featuring Bach’s Violin Concerto in E Major, BWV 1042, along with Schoenberg’s “Verklärte Nacht” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 “Eroica.”

--Italian conductor Daniele Gatti conducts the Vienna Philharmonic on March 3 in Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished” and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.

--The Los Angeles Philharmonic will be led on April 26 by French conductor Stéphane Denève and feature violinist Gil Shaham in Bartok’s Violin Concerto No. 2, along with James MacMillan’s three interludes from “The Sacrifice,” with a third element of the program is to be announced.
