Netflix to distribute first-run Disney films on-demand in Netherlands

Netflix said it will become the exclusive subscription on-demand service providing Disney live-action and animated films in the Netherlands.

Beginning next year, Netflix subscribers will have access to first-run films from Disney, Pixar and Marvel studios -- such as “The Avengers,” “Monsters University” and “The Lone Ranger” -- to watch on their Internet-connected devices.

The service already streams several Disney and Pixar movies, including “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” and “Ratatouille,” classics like “Mary Poppins” and “Lady and the Tramp,” as well as complete seasons of the ABC Studios’ television show “Lost.”

Netflix has been investing in exclusive content, as well as expanding the service internationally. It launched its subscription offering in the Netherlands in September.

In its third fiscal quarter, Netflix said it added 1.4 million new international subscribers compared with a year ago as it expanded into the Nordics and the Netherlands. The service also saw a surge in free trials in Latin America. Netflix also is offered in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Netflix now boasts more than 9 million subscribers outside of the United States.
