‘Spectre,’ ‘The Peanuts Movie’ look to extend box-office winning streak

They are both well over 60 years old, but James Bond and Charlie Brown haven’t aged a bit when it comes to demonstrating their staying power, taking the top spots at the domestic box office on Friday with an eye toward extending their winning streak in their second weekend in theaters.

“Spectre” and “The Peanuts Movie” took the No. 1 and 2 box office places, respectively, on Friday in what is shaping up to be a relatively tepid weekend for new releases.

The 24th Bond installment, starring Daniel Craig as 007, brought in an estimated $10.2 million Friday and is expected to gross as much as $35.5 million for the weekend, or about half its opening weekend haul of $70.4 million.

“Spectre” has earned more than $105 million domestically and $325 million worldwide.

The animated “Peanuts” took in approximately $5.6 million Friday and is on track to gross $23 million for its second weekend.

Among new releases, “Love the Coopers,” a holiday family comedy, grossed an estimated $2.8 million Friday, while “The 33,” the Chilean miners movie, took in approximately $1.8 million.

In limited release, “By the Sea,” written and directed by Angelina Jolie Pitt, grossed approximately $38,000 in 10 theaters for a per-theater average of $3,800. The French-flavored movie, which stars real-life spouses Jolie Pitt and Brad Pitt as a couple coming apart, is expected to earn $132,000 on its first weekend.

Expanding to 60 theaters, “Spotlight” is projected to earn almost $391,000 Friday and is on track to take in $1 million for the weekend. The critically acclaimed drama about The Boston Globe’s investigation of sexual abuse in the Catholic church is an Oscar hopeful in many major categories.

“The Martian” added an estimated $1.9 million to its fortunes Friday. The Ridley Scott sci-fi movie starring Matt Damon, projected to bring in $7 million for the weekend, has grossed more than $200 million domestically.

The football-themed “My All American” earned a projected $520,000 Friday at 1,565 locations on its opening day.
