Fox defeated TV competition with its broadcast of Game 6 of the World Series between the Kansas City Royals and the San Francisco Giants -- but the network didn’t hit a home run in overall ratings.

The game, which was a blow-out with the Royals beating the Giants 10-0, generated a household rating of 8.1 and about 13.4 million viewers -- making it the highest-rated and most-watched of the 2014 World Series, according to Nielsen.

But last year’s World Series was more popular. A year ago, Game 6 between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals drew about 18 million viewers. In that game, the Red Sox beat the Cardinals to win the series.

Still, even with the lower numbers, the series has helped Fox’s new fall primetime lineup, which has been roughed up in the ratings. Fox reported the game was the network’s highest-rated primetime broadcast (excluding Super Bowl Sunday) since the “American Idol” premiere in January.

Even the 2012 series -- the lowest-rated ever -- in which the San Francisco Giants swept the Detroit Tigers, scored bigger numbers. The sixth game of the seven-game 2011 series drew more than 21 million viewers in the final ratings.

In local markets, Game 6 of the 2014 series was most watched in Kansas City, where it posted a household rating of 54.6. San Francisco followed with a household rating of 27.7. Game 7 is on Wednesday.

Up against baseball, CBS took second-overall-most-watched network in the key 18-to-49-year-old demographic. Overall, the network averaged 14.2 million viewers.

“NCIS” was up 4% from last week with a rating of 2.5 in the key demo. The show averaged 17.2 million viewers.

Meanwhile, “NCIS: New Orleans” dropped 4% from last week with a rating of 2.3 in the key demo and about 15.7 million viewers.

Also on the network, “Person of Interest” increased 7% with a rating of 1.6 in the key demo. It averaged 9.7 million viewers.

Though NBC’s “The Voice” dropped from last week, the singing competition was the most-watched non-sports program in the key demo with a rating of 2.9. It averaged 11.4 million viewers overall.

Other shows on the network also fell slightly in ratings.

“Marry Me” earned a rating of 1.5 in the key demo. “About a Boy” was also down 14% from last week and tied its series low with a rating of 1.2 in the key demo. “Chicago Fire” dropped 11% from last week with a rating of 1.7 in the key demo.

On ABC, “The Great Halloween Fright Fight” was down 21% from last year’s “Great Christmas Light Fright.” The special earned a rating of 1.1 in the key demo and averaged 3.8 million viewers.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” surged 55% from the Halloween special lead-in. It averaged a rating of 1.7 in the key demo, up 6% from last week.

“Forever” drew in its biggest audience in three weeks with about 5 million viewers. The show posted a rating of 1.1 in the key demo.
