‘American Reunion’ finishing strong international run
Turns out it was foreigners and not Americans who wanted to check out an “American Reunion.”
Despite a soft domestic box office take of $56.8 million, significantly lower than the prior three “American Pie” films, April’s “American Reunion” has been the most successful of them all overseas.
After opening in its final overseas territory, South Korea, this weekend, Universal Pictures’ comedy brought its international total up to $178 million.
That’s a phenomenal figure for an R-rated American comedy, a genre that tends to perform poorly overseas, with rare exceptions such as “The Hangover.”
In addition to English-speaking Britain and Australia, “American Reunion” has performed notably well in Germany, France, Russia and Brazil.
The prior three “Pie” movies did well overseas too: 1999’s “American Pie” grossed $133 million internationally; 2001’s “American Pie 2” grossed $142.5 million internationally; and 2003’s “American Wedding” took in $127 million from foreign audiences.
Universal’s R-rated “Ted” is also performing well overseas, having taken in $113.2 million from 25 foreign markets since its June release, with healthy performances in Spain, Britain, Germany and Australia. It opens in an additional 33 international markets next week.
