Palm Springs Film Festival bestows honor on Helen Mirren

The Palm Springs International Film Festival announced Wednesday morning that Helen Mirren will receive the International Star Award at a Jan. 5 gala at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Mirren, who won the lead actress Academy Award for the 2006 film “The Queen,” was also nominated Wednesday morning for a Screen Actors Guild Award for lead actress in “Hitchcock,” in which she plays the filmmaker’s wife, Alma Reville.

“With more than four decades’ worth of memorable film, television and stage performances, Helen Mirren continues to be one of the most outstanding actresses of her generation,” said festival chairman Harold Matzner in a statement Wednesday.

Past recipients of the award include Oscar-winner Javier Bardem and Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman.

The 24th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival takes place Jan. 3-14.
