Golden Globe nominations 2013: Meryl Streep still has the touch

Share

Meryl Streep is a perennial awards season favorite, having racked up a whopping 17 Academy Awards nominations and three wins, plus 27 Golden Globes nominations and eight wins. Most recently, her performance as Margaret Thatcher in 2011’s “The Iron Lady” won lead-actress honors at both ceremonies, upsetting Viola Davis of “The Help.”

Though Streep was expected to lie low as an award contender this year with her performance in the domestic drama “Hope Springs,” her nomination Thursday morning for a Golden Globe, for lead actress in a comedy or musical, shows that she still has the Midas touch.

The film, in which Streep stars opposite Tommy Lee Jones as a dissatisfied 60-something wife who convinces her husband to go into couples therapy, earned solid reviews (with a 73% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and receipts (grossing $63 million domestically) but isn’t exactly Oscar bait.

Earlier this year, the Times’ Glenn Whipp praised Streep’s performance in “Hope Springs” and groused, “the fact that Streep likely will be roundly ignored for her deeply felt turn … speaks volumes to the narrow range of movies and performances that academy members reward.”

Streep’s nomination will surely come as welcome news to her legions of fans, who rallied around the actress online a year ago. As determined by the Times’ Oscar Senti-Meter, which analyzed buzz on Twitter, Streep was by far the most popular actor or actress discussed on the social-networking site during the last award season.

Shortly after the announcement of this year’s Golden Globes nominations, Streep fans once again took to Twitter to express their delight. User @LapizSilkwood wrote, “Meryl Streep got her 27th nomination at the GG. I mean seriously, nobody will ever top that in a lifetime. Ever,” while @JeanMakhlouta wrote, “meryl streep could play batman and be the right choice. she’s perfection.”
