Animation Guild reaches deal on new contract

Animators who work on a range of movies and TV shows, from the Cartoon Network series “Green Lantern” to DreamWorks Animation’s current theatrical release “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” will get a slight bump in pay under a newly negotiated contract.

The Animation Guild Local 839 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees said it had reached a tentative agreement with producers early Wednesday morning on a new three-year deal that will provide 2% annual increases in wages. The guild represents 2,800 artists, writers and technicians employed in the animation industry.

At the same time, employers agreed to a 20% increase in their hourly contribution to the union’s health plan. Members with dependents, however, would also be required for the first time to pay premiums of $25 to $50 a month for healthcare coverage.

The new contract also clarifies that the work of storyboard artists and editors is covered under the agreement.

Last month, IATSE negotiated a similar deal on behalf of various Hollywood locals representing camera operators, set decorators, grips and others who work behind the scenes on movies and TV shows.

If approved by members, the new animation contract will take effect Aug. 1.

Guild negotiators walked out of talks in April, but resumed negotiations on Tuesday until an agreement was reached about 1 a.m. Wednesday.
