Will ‘Taken 2’ take big box office? Diller on why movies stink.

The Skinny: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations came out and while I have nothing but love for Donna Summer, was she really rock ‘n’ roll? Thursday’s headlines include a shake-up at MGM, Redbox wants to sell tickets along with renting movies and 20th Century Fox is hoping “Taken 2” can deliver the goods.

Daily Dose: Fox, which has the rights to the World Series this year, will probably be rooting for the Yankees to represent the American League since New York is the biggest market and the rest of the country either loves or hates the Bronx Bombers. The tougher question is which team from the National League would help boost ratings. The Cardinals and Braves have big followings, but a case can be made for the Washington Nationals, even with star pitcher Stephen Strasburg sitting out the postseason. One thing is for sure, Fox probably wouldn’t be too excited about an Oakland-Cincinnati series.

Over and out. Roger Birnbaum resigned as co-chief executive of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as the studio prepares to go public. Birnbaum, who ran the creative side of MGM, will remain associated with the company as a producer. Gary Barber will now be the CEO of MGM, whose upcoming movies include the James Bond thriller “Skyfall” and “Lord of the Rings” prequel “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” Details from the Los Angeles Times, Variety and Bloomberg.

Punch your ticket. Redbox, which made a business out of renting movies from kiosks at supermarkets and 7-Elevens, is now going to offer concert tickets as well. However, don’t expect to see long lines of Rush fans in front of a Redbox booth. The tickets that it will sell will be those hard-to-get-rid-of seats in the nosebleed section. Lost control. The Morning Fix steers clear of politics so I won’t talk about who did better in Wednesday night’s debate. But it is clear that moderator Jim Lehrer had trouble keeping control of the candidates, who constantly went over time and veered off topic. I didn’t even know there were 50 good TV shows. The Hollywood Reporter lists the top 50 showrunners. For those who aren’t familiar with TV lingo, a showrunner is the one who basically calls the shots. You know what showrunners love? When random strangers call and write with story ideas. Why movies stink. Barry Diller, who used to run Paramount Pictures and is now an Internet mogul, ripped into the movie business in an interview with American Public Radio’s Marketplace. “One of the reasons I think movies kind of stink is because they’re now so low on the totem pole of greater corporate interests,” Diller said. In other words, if it isn’t a franchise or doesn’t have a toy in it, Hollywood doesn’t want to make it.

More reasons to resent Lena Dunham. “Girls” creator Lena Dunham is shopping a book and so far the offers from publishers have topped $3 million, according to Deadline Hollywood.
