‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ theatrical run extended

Indiana Jones is hanging around movie theaters a little longer.

After its “one-week-only” re-release in 267 Imax theaters ended the day before, Paramount Pictures said Friday that “Raiders of the Lost Ark” will continue playing this weekend and add some non-Imax screens.

The total number of locations playing the 1981 film, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford, will be more than 300, Paramount said.

Extending the runs of movies first announced as limited runs has become standard procedure in Hollywood. Among films in the last few years that were originally set to play in theaters for just a week or two and ended up staying longer were the Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It,” the 3-D concert picture “Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds,” and a 3-D re-release of “Toy Story” in 2009.

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” has been a hit so far in its Imax run. In one week, it has grossed a healthy $2.4 million. On Thursday, it was the No. 10 movie overall with $256,085. Its per-theater average of $824 was higher than the top five films combined.

The re-release was intended primarily to promote a Blu-ray release on Tuesday of all four “Indiana Jones” pictures. But it looks like Paramount will enjoy some financial success at the box office too.
