Golden Globes 2013: ‘Girls’ wins for TV comedy/musical
HBO’s “Girls” won a Golden Globe award for television comedy or musical series Sunday night, beating out a diverse field that included last year’s winner, “Modern Family” (ABC), as well as “Smash” (NBC), “Episodes” (Showtime) and “The Big Bang Theory” (CBS).
Created by and starring Lena Dunham, “Girls” centers on a clique of self-involved 20-something Brooklynites. The divisive program earned both fervent acclaim and intense criticism when it debuted last year. Its second season also began on Sunday night. Judd Apatow is executive producer of the series, which costars Jemima Kirke, Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet.
It beat “Modern Family,” a perennial favorite in both the Emmys and the Golden Globes that continues to be one of the highest-rated sitcoms on network television. Structured as a mockumentary, the series revolves around three branches of the extended Pritchett family. It was created by TV veterans Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd and its ensemble cast includes Sofia Vergara, Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet.

“Episodes” is a showbiz satire about a married team of British television writers who move to Hollywood to work on an American remake of their hit sitcom. Matt LeBlanc stars as a fictionalized version of himself, and picked up a Golden Globe for his performance last year.
“Smash” focuses on the troubled development of a new Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. It debuted to much fanfare on NBC at midseason last year and stars Debra Messing as the musical’s co-creator and Katharine McPhee as its would-be star.
Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, “The Big Bang Theory” follows two brilliant but awkward physicists who learn much-needed life skills from their fetching next-door neighbor. Now in its sixth season on CBS, it is television’s highest-rated sitcom, regularly drawing close to 20 million viewers a week. Star Jim Parsons has received numerous accolades for his performance, including a 2011 Golden Globe.
The Golden Globes are being held Sunday at the Beverly Hilton and are being televised on NBC.
