IMAX for the home: Is your house big enough?

Prima Cinema and its $35,000 price tag for first-run movies is so two weeks ago. If you really want to flaunt your cash, IMAX is where it’s at.

For a mere $2 million, you can have your very own giant screen system in the comfort of your home. IMAX Corp. is in the process of unveiling IMAX Private Theatre, a 2-D and 3-D system complete with a floor-to-ceiling screen and a state-of-the art sound system. All you need is a room big enough to hold it.

The first two installations for the product, which is essentially the same one found in your local multiplex, are expected to be completed by July with two others currently in the design phase.

IMAX won’t disclose who will receive its first home theater systems, but “Family Guy” creator and recent Oscar host Seth MacFarlane has been rumored to be at the top of the list.

His rep said she doesn’t comment on MacFarlane’s personal purchases.

IMAX Chief Executive Rich Gelfond recently spoke about the new business area on CNBC, confirming the $2-million price tag and some of the attributes, which include 24-hour customer service, a proprietary microphone system that calibrates the sound quality daily, and a digital 4k projector.

“If you have a couple million dollars laying around, take a look,” said Gelfond, who admitted that he won’t be one of the early purchasers.

“I don’t have one. I don’t have a house big enough in New York City,” he said.

But he suggested a solution for anyone wanting a system but not living in a house big enough to contain one: “For $2 million more, you get a house also.”
