Billy Bob Thornton explains his bloody past with Angelina Jolie

Remember how Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie wore vials of each other’s blood around their necks during their passionate three-year relationship? Seems it didn’t happen exactly like that.

That the details were exaggerated in in a celebrity marriage isn’t surprising, as the couple were major tabloid fodder back in the day as she became his fifth wife and he her second husband after only two months of dating.

“You know those lockets you buy that are clear and you put a picture of your granny in and wear it around your neck? She bought two of those,” Thornton explained to the Hollywood Reporter, looking back on a time in his life he said he’s “never been fond” of.

They were apart a lot, he said, working on different films, and Jolie got an idea about how to feel closer to one another.

“She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razor blade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets and you wear it around your neck just like you wear your son or daughter’s baby hair in one,” he said.

Mm hmm. And now she’s meeting with the queen and saving the world with the United Nations.

“From that,” Thornton said, “we were wearing quart jars of blood around our necks.”

A smear of blood is totally not as interesting or romantic as a vial of blood, that’s for sure -- sounds more like a slide under a microscope than a declaration of vampire-inspired love.

And yeah, the vampire rumor wasn’t true either. Nor was the living-in-a-dungeon story: Turns out there was a recording studio in his basement, blah blah blah.

Clearly, romance is dead.
