The theme for HBO’s huge Emmy bash on Sunday night was fire, which, depending on how you look at it, was either totally perfect or horribly timed.

Indeed, HBO was on fire at the Emmys, taking home a whopping 43 trophies. But it was also over 90 degrees and humid in the Los Angeles area Sunday, and guests definitely weren’t looking to be surrounded by fire after a day of sweating through tuxedo shirts and ball gowns.

There was a big rotating faux flame in the middle of the room at the Pacific Design Center, and the decor was reddish orange: the sequined tablecloths, the velvet booths, even the food, which included quinoa beet salad, heirloom tomatoes, carrots and ricotta.

A Latin-flavored band covered songs having to do with scorching temperatures, including Buster Poindexter’s “Hot Hot Hot.” There wasn’t any air-conditioning, which led to a lot of groaning, but ladies were at least able to dab their sweat away at a Lorac touch-up booth.

The bash welcomed an eclectic cast of characters. Those HBO staples you’d expect to be holding court were there: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who piled her Emmy onto a table filled with other “Veep” trophies; Gwendoline Christie of “GoT,” who perched at a table absolutely glowing; plus Peter Dinklage from “Game of Thrones” and Adam Driver of “Girls.” But Marilyn Manson was there too, deep in conversation with screenwriter Bryan Fuller.

“Game of Thrones” folks David Benioff and Pedro Pascal hugged it out after being reunited, while Benioff’s wife, Amanda Peet, actually looked chill behind them in a beautiful black gown.

And author George R.R. Martin relaxed in the middle of it all at a table full of “GoT” folks including John Bradley. Each group of HBO shows had its own little collection of tables with a security guard nearby, and so many people were approaching Martin that his guard was on full alert.

Zach Woods from “Silicon Valley” was chatting people up, and Billy Eichner of “Billy on the Street,” who’d gotten a backstage compliment from winner Jon Hamm, did the same, looking taller and skinnier than he does on the small screen.

Alan Cumming circulated and James Corden and his wife were pulled into giving a few quotes on their way in after the red carpet was breaking down.

As a whole, the party had a big-time “Game of Thrones” vibe. With that gigantic fire sculpture in the middle of the room, and the fire pits and gold mirrors, it really looked like Melisandre was going to show up and proclaim, “The night is dark and full or terrors!”
