Kayaking Russell Crowe gets a hand from the U.S. Coast Guard

Russell Crowe and a friend got into a bind while adventuring in kayaks over the Labor Day weekend — and unlike the semi-regular hoaxes that have the “Gladiator” star running afoul of adventure, usually in the mountains of Austria, this story’s actually true.

Crowe and trainer buddy Chris Feather rented two one-man kayaks out of Cold Spring Harbor, according to WPIX. Alas, they didn’t make it all the way to their destination before the sun went down and decided to beach in Huntington Harbor, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

But while the two were definitely in a fix, they were not in fact lost, the actor pointed out Sunday via Twitter.

“not lost,we knew where exactly where we were, paddling around from csh into wind, we ran out of day,” said Crowe, who regularly logs his fitness efforts on Twitter. “Grand adventure eh @chris_feather?”

Sounds like some fun was had, however — by the rescuers, who happened by around 10 p.m. Saturday.

“It is common for the Coast Guard to assist boaters like this, but it was very cool to help Russell Crowe and his friend,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert Swieciki. “Crowe and his friend were very grateful to get a lift.”

For its part, the USCG was grateful to see the two wearing their lifejackets, as the service recommends all kayakers do.

Crowe, who with a full beard looks a bit like Rob Reiner in a photo snapped by the Coast Guard, is in the area playing Noah in the epic 2014 film of the same name.
