The Twelfth Doctor may be known more for his sonic sunglasses, but his brand new sonic screwdriver made its on-screen debut in "The Doctor Who" season finale and you can get an even closer look at the device in a video released by the BBC.

Peter Capaldi explains that the new sonic screwdriver is "TARDIS blue" and shows how it lights up when you operate it.

The sonic screwdriver, of course, is a multi-functional tool (and sometimes weapon) that has become a signature device used by the Doctor. The first iteration of the device was introduced and used by the Secnd Doctor. The sonic itself has undergone redesigns over the years as various Doctors found a need to replace the previous device for one reason or another (the Twelfth Doctor, for example, lost his old sonic when he abandoned a boy he discovered was a young version of Davros).

Having barely used it, Capaldi admits in the video to not knowing everything his new sonic is capable of.

It looks like it won't be long before viewers can see the new sonic screwdriver in action. The promotional art for the upcoming "Doctor Who" Christmas special, "The Husbands of River Song" shows him with his new sonic in hand.
