Quick Takes: Katy Perry makes history

When Katy Perry first came on the scene, some dismissed her as a one-hit wonder. Three years later, she has proved she’s a multi-hit wonder, becoming the first woman to score five No. 1 songs from one album on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Her “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” set the precedent: It’s the latest No. 1 from her platinum album “Teenage Dream.”

Only Michael Jackson had five No. 1s from one album (“Bad”) before Perry. But Jackson spent a total of seven weeks at the top with his “Bad” songs; Perry has been at the top perch now for a cumulative 18 weeks.

KCET will tape, air Ford concerts

In collaboration with the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, public-TV station KCET said Wednesday it plans to tape four live performances at the Ford Amphitheatre and edit them into one-hour programs that will air this fall in a series called “Live @ the Ford.”

The Ford performances to be included are Friday’s “Ruta del Norte: Northern Route,” featuring the Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company, “Rhythm & Passion of Korea” on Sept. 10, the fourth annual J.U.i.C.E.

Hip Hop Dance Festival on Sept. 30 and the Angel City Jazz Festival on Oct. 1.

A spokeswoman for KCET said the series was unrelated to the announcement the station made the day before about a deal with Eyetronics Media that could result in up to $50 million for local programming.

McBride taps celebs for video

Martina McBride’s new single, “I’m Gonna Love You Through It,” is an inspirational song about going through cancer, and for the video, she enlisted the help of a few famous faces to convey the message.

“Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, singer Sheryl Crow, ABC’s Katie Couric and “Today” anchor Hoda Kotb all appear in the clip, which debuted Wednesday on CMT.com.

Roberts, Crow and Kotb are survivors of breast cancer; Couric’s husband died of colon cancer.

McBride, who has never had cancer, says she wanted to sing the song to give hope and positive messages to those going through the struggle. The song is from her new album, “Eleven,” due out Oct. 11.

Writer Patterson tops earnings list

American author and entertainment mogul James Patterson tops a Forbes magazine list of the world’s highest paid authors, earning more than twice that of No. 2 Danielle Steel.

Patterson, 64, the dominant mass-market fiction author who has published more than 80 books at a prolific rate with the help of collaborators, earned $84 million for the past year, according to the survey based on sales from May 2010 to April 2011. The sales figures were supplied by Nielsen SoundScan, and Forbes considered input from numerous agents, managers and editors.

Steel, also 64, earned $35 million, according to the Forbes survey at https://www.forbes.com.

Landing at No. 3 was horror and suspense writer Stephen King, earning $28 million, followed by romance adventure author Janet Evanovich with $22 million and “Twilight” novelist Stephenie Meyer with $21 million in sales.

A&F to ‘Jersey Shore’: Enough

Abercrombie & Fitch is offering to pay Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and his fellow “Jersey Shore” cast members so they’ll stop wearing the brand on the show.

The clothing company said it’s concerned that having Sorrentino seen in its clothing could cause “significant damage” to the “aspirational nature” of the company’s image.

Prop. 8 play in New York

Anthony Edwards, Morgan Freeman, Cheyenne Jackson, Christine Lahti, Rob Reiner, Yeardley Smith and Marisa Tomei will appear in a one-night-only reading on Broadway of a play about Proposition 8.

On Wednesday, producers announced some of the cast members who will perform in Dustin Lance Black’s play “8” on Sept. 19 as part of a fundraiser at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.

Proposition 8 is the measure approved by California voters in 2008 that bans gay marriage in the state. A federal judge struck down the law last year. That ruling is being appealed.

Black won the Oscar for “Milk,” his biopic of gay-rights pioneer Harvey Milk.

“Idol” judges: In case anyone was still wondering, Fox officially announced Wednesday that Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson would be returning to “American Idol” as judges next season.

Memorial: The country duo Sugarland is planning a private memorial in Indiana to honor the five fans who were killed Saturday night when a stage collapsed during a storm, but not until after families hold their own services for the victims.
