Quick Takes: Rockers aid Sandy relief

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will help anchor another all-star benefit to aid in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, once again joined by fellow New Jersey and New York artists Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Joel. The Dec. 12 concert “12-12-12” will be held at Madison Square Garden and also will feature the likes of Kanye West, Paul McCartney, Alicia Keys, Roger Waters and the Who.

More artists are expected to be unveiled. Ticket information for the concert was not yet released. The benefit is to be produced by Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, the Madison Square Garden Co. and the Weinstein Co.

A news release notes that “telecast information” will be unveiled in days to come.

Proceeds from the “12-12-12” concert will go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which distributes money and materials to local organizations. With Clear Channel promoting the concert via its online/mobile platform iHeartRadio, expect there to be some sort of simulcast or post-show archive of performances.

Warhol Liberty: $43.8 million

An Andy Warhol silk-screen depiction of the Statue of Liberty created in 1962 has sold for $43.8 million at a Christie’s sale in New York. The sale was part of a larger Christie’s contemporary art auction Wednesday that brought in a hefty $412.3 million.

“Statue of Liberty” features multiple tiled images of the famous statue, with each image sporting a 3-D effect. (The auction house marketed the catalog with a pair of 3-D glasses, according to reports.) Christie’s said the painting was sold from a private collection but did not reveal the owner.

The sale price doesn’t break any records for Warhol. The pop artist’s “Eight Elvises” sold for a reported $100 million in 2009. Another Warhol silk screen — a depiction of Marlon Brando from “The Wild One” — was sold for $23.7 million.

Earlier this week, the Warhol Foundation reportedly earned more than $17 million by selling off many of the artist’s works, including Warhol’s depiction of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and a self-portrait. The proceeds from the auction will go to the foundation.

Kelley project to be completed

When artist Mike Kelley died this year he left behind a number of unfinished projects. One of the biggest was “Mobile Homestead,” a large-scale replica of the artist’s home in suburban Detroit. Now it appears that the project will come to life posthumously thanks to a grant awarded to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit.

The museum announced that it has received a $150,000 grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation for the completion of “Mobile Homestead.” The museum expects to finish construction of the project in early 2013.

Kelley hailed from the Detroit area but spent much of his adult life in Southern California. The artist, 57, was found dead in February at his home in South Pasadena. It is believed that his death was a suicide.

Levine leads People’s Choices

Adam Levine spans music and television with his leading six nominations for the People’s Choice Awards.

The Maroon 5 frontman and star of TV’s “The Voice” is up for favorite band, song, album and music video, along with favorite celebrity judge and favorite competition TV show.

Nominations were announced Thursday at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills.

Justin Bieber has five nods, followed by the newly crowned “Sexiest Man Alive,” Channing Tatum, with four. “Glee” was the most-nominated TV show with five, and “The Avengers” leads movie nominees with eight.

The People’s Choice Awards will be presented Jan. 9 and broadcast on CBS.

‘Gone Girl’ author not gone

“Gone Girl” novelist Gillian Flynn is sticking around.

The million-selling author has agreed to write two more books for Random House Inc. The publisher announced Thursday that she will write a novel and a young adult novel. The books currently are untitled and publication dates have not been set.

“Gone Girl” has been among the top sellers of 2012, with sales approaching 2 million copies. Flynn’s previous works include “Sharp Objects” and “Dark Places.”

Hunt to be feted in Palm Springs

Helen Hunt will receive the Spotlight Award at the 24th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards gala Jan. 5 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The festival takes place Jan. 3-14.

The 49-year-old holds four Emmys and an Oscar.
