Critic’s Choice: Los Angeles stars in UCLA film series

For those who like to plan a bit ahead, “This Is the City,” the excellent UCLA Film & Television Archive series of Los Angeles-based cinema screening at the Hammer Museum in Westwood, really hits gold in the days ahead with a pair of excellent programs.

On Dec. 13, starting at 7 p.m., feast your eyes on a classic double bill. First on the screen is a personal favorite, Robert Aldrich’s 1955 “Kiss Me Deadly,” showing what happens when tough detective Mike Hammer comes up against the possible end of the world. Next up is Joseph Losey’s 1951 film “M,” a taut remake of the Fritz Lang classic staring David Wayne.

Then, on Dec. 14, starting at 7:30 p.m., there’s “Los Angeles in the Newsreels,” a one-of-a-kind event featuring UCLA’s newsreel preservationists Blaine Bartell and Jeffrey Bickel to walk us through the city on film.
