‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’ loses release date

Those waiting for the further adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow will have to wait a little longer.

In what will probably be seen as another blow to the once seemingly invincible producer Jerry Bruckheimer, the release date of the fifth installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise has been changed from July 10, 2015, to the ominous sounding “unset.” The change was noted in a brief message sent out Tuesday afternoon as a “Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures release schedule update.”

Production on “Pirates of the Caribbean 5,” often referred to with the secondary title “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” has not yet begun. The new film is being directed by Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, whose adventure film “Kon-Tiki” was nominated for the best foreign language Oscar.

This summer saw Bruckheimer weather the release of “The Lone Ranger,” which made only $88 million at the U.S. box office. Made with key members of the original “Pirates” team, including director Gore Verbinski, star Johnny Depp and screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, “Lone Ranger” was said to have cost as much as $250 million to produce. In August 2001, “The Lone Ranger” went through a high-profile production shutdown in a standoff with Disney regarding the budget.

The previous four “Pirates” films have grossed about $3.73 billion worldwide combined.
