Perpetrators of genocide, killer whales living in captivity and actor-director Sarah Polley’s parents are the subjects of some of the films nominated for 2013 International Documentary Assn. Awards, the IDA announced Tuesday.

The five films nominated in the IDA’s feature category are “The Act of Killing,” Joshua Oppenheimer’s retelling of the Indonesian mass murders of the 1960s; “Blackfish,” Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s investigation of orcas living in captivity; “Let the Fire Burn,” Jason Osder’s narrative of a 1985 standoff between MOVE activists and the Philadelphia Police Department; “The Square,” Jehane Noujaim’s documenting of the Egyptian revolution; and “Stories We Tell,” Polley’s exploration of the relationship between her parents.

The IDA will also honor Zachary Heinzerling, the producer, director and cinematographer of “Cutie and the Boxer,” a film about the marriage between two artists, with the 2013 Jacqueline Donnet Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award.

The association previously announced that it will confer its Career Achievement Award on director Alex Gibney, whose latest film, “The Armstrong Lie,” opens Nov. 8, and present its Courage Under Fire Award to filmmaker Laura Poitras, who helped break the story of National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.

The 29th IDA Documentary Awards are scheduled for Dec. 6 at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles.
