Cory Monteith: ‘McCanick’ clip shows him as street hustler

In his career as an actor, Cory Monteith wasn’t known for his film roles.

But the “Glee” star, who died over the weekend at 31, was starting to beef up his movie resume, and in September shot a film in which he played a man who struggled with addiction.

Titled “McCanick” and directed by Josh Waller, the movie follows a cop by that name (David Morse) as he tries to solve a murder, and enlists Monteith’s character, a street hustler who has just been paroled after a seven-year prison stint, to help him.

In a new clip, above, Monteith can be seen in hoodie and long hair as he leans in to McCanick’s car, insisting he has a job and nervously deliberating on how much to tell the law-enforcement agent what he knows about a crime.

The role was personal to Monteith, who had spent years battling his own addiction issues. “He didn’t say it was a cathartic experience, but you could sense it,” Waller told my colleague Amy Kaufman.
